Grid Modernisation, Digitalisation and AI
India’s grid must become smarter and more flexible to absorb distributed renewables, EV charging and new demand patterns. Digital systems and AI will be central to forecasting, balancing and reliability. ESOI advances this shift through standards, pilots and policy guidance that accelerate secure digital infrastructure for power, aligned with Digital India.
India’s grid must evolve to integrate bidirectional flows from renewables, EV charging and microgrids. Digitalisation and artificial intelligence are critical for a flexible, resilient grid of the future. Key solutions include advanced energy management systems, AI-based on-demand energy forecasting, and large-scale storage (India targets 50 GW of battery storage). ESOI promotes development of smart grid technologies such as grid “digital twins” (virtual replicas used in Rajasthan pilots) and unified data platforms to optimize planning. It also works on standards for IoT devices and smart meters, cybersecurity and interoperability. These efforts align with the Digital India mission by creating a modern digital infrastructure for power. Through policy advice and pilot programmes, ESOI accelerates adoption of AI and IoT in grid operations, ensuring reliable integration of all energy resources.
